FlightSafety & Varjo: Mixed reality for aviation training
“A completely realistic and immersive environment for the student.”
FlightSafety International is the world’s premier professional aviation training company and supplier of flight simulators, visual systems and displays to commercial, government and military organizations. The company provides more than 1.4 million hours of training each year in over 40 learning centres around the world.
At I/ITSEC 2019, Varjo and FlightSafety collaborated to showcase a pioneering mixed reality flight trainer demo. Using Varjo’s camera-based mixed reality solution and FlightSafety’s image generator Vital, the demo blended together a virtual scene of the world with a real-life cockpit.
The trainees can see the real flight controls, all the instrument panels as well as their own hands while flying in a photorealistic synthetic environment.
“We see that Varjo is a breakthrough technology. In the world of virtual and mixed reality training, there’s been a barrier in headset resolution. And the Varjo has broken through that barrier. Now, the pilots and trainees will be able to read the instruments in the scene, which has been a major obstacle to the use of these devices in the past. It’s really a milestone event,” said Bob Vaughn, Product Manager at FlightSafety.
